Forest & LANDSCAPE DYNAMICS

Assessing land-use legacies to understand forest functioning and model their future dynamics

Welcome! I am Aitor Ameztegui, Associate Professor (Serra-Hunter fellow) at the Department of Agriculture and Forest Sciences and Engineering of the Universitat de Lleida (Spain), and an associate researcher at the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia. I completed my PhD at the CTFC (2013) and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Université du Québec à Montréal (2013-2015).

I am member of the Adaptive Management and Forest Dynamics research group (Adaptafor). Our lab is particularly interested in (i) the assessment of land-use legacies and how they impact forest dynamics and their capacity to respond to the challenges of climate change; and (ii) the use of simulation models to inform forest management and decision making. Our final aim is to help decision-makers to anticipate global change impacts through the implementation of appropriate adaptive management strategies based on the best available science.”

RESEARCH LINES

Forest dynamics, modeling & multifunctional forest management

We aim to integrate forest management into a suite of models to evaluate how different silvicultural strategies could better mitigate the negative impacts associated with climate change, helping build multifunctional and resilient forests.

Landscape ecology
and historical sources

Through the assessment of the spatial patterns of land abandonment and forest expansion, we aim to gain insights on the underlying causes of land abandonment, and the implications for forest dynamics and biodiversity conservation.

Remote sensing monitoring
of forest ecosystems

New modeling techniques and the use of big data and new sources of information (LiDAR, remote sensing) offer a unique opportunity to perform global assessments of forest structure and gain insight into the functioning of forest ecosystems.

“We assess the future consequences that the management decisions we take today may have on the functioning of forests, their ability to provide different ecosystem services, and their resilience, i.e. their ability to cope with disturbances.”
